RIP: Hip Hop Artist/Reggae Singer/Actor Heavy D

Many of you may not know this, but I am a HUGE, longtime fan of Heavy D. His music always brought a smile to my face, heart, and dancing feet. No other Hip Hop artist, in the past or now, dedicated his art to talking about "romancing" (not sleeping with or identifying body parts of) women, loving oneself, and embracing humanity like he did. I am still in shock at his departure. I, of course, had to show him some love on my blog.

You will be missed, Heavy, but your artistic contribution to world will live on. May you RIP.

Recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Great American Jazz Piano Competition, and the American Composers Forum, Gary Motley has been featured in Downbeat Magazine and on Piano Jazz with Marian McPartland. His recording credits range from Russell Malone’s Black Butterfly to his most recent recording, Renaissance: A Tribute to Oscar Peterson. He has performed with Benny Golson, Eddie Daniels, Carmen Bradford, Kenny Barron, and Dave Brubeck, among others. A member of the American Federation of Musicians, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and the National Association for Music Education, Gary Motley is the director of the jazz studies program at Emory University, where he has developed The Jazz Studio, an interactive teaching facility that integrates the rich heritage of American jazz with current technology practices. In addition to his work as an educator, Motley continues to work with many jazz industry leaders, performing both in the United States and abroad.

MUSIC: SW (Atl) Music Festival Sept. 14-16

The Southwest Music Festival will be held Friday through Sunday September 14- 16 at Cascade Field, I285 and Cascade Road. National recording artist Howard Hewitt , 70's and 80's R & B groups The Bar-Kays and Brick, soulful singers Sol Factor, P Diddy's young music industry favorites B-5 and gospel singer Darlene McCoy will headline a list of outstanding entertainment for this free and fun event for the entire family. Last year attendance topped 30,000 at this three day popular festival. Other festival highlights: Car show, food and merchandise vendors and fireworks.
