FESTIVAL: BronzeLens Film Festival Nov. 10-13

The BronzeLens Film Festival of Atlanta, Georgia is a non-profit organization, founded in 2009, that is dedicated to bringing national and worldwide attention to Atlanta as a center for film and film production for people of color.

In fact, the mission of the BronzeLens Film Festival of Atlanta, Georgia is two fold: to promote Atlanta as the new film mecca for people of color; and to showcase films and provide networking opportunities that will develop the next generation of filmmakers.

From November 10 through 13, 2011, film lovers, actors, and film makers will gather in culture-and-heritage-rich Atlanta, Georgia, at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis to share a creative platform of education, entertainment and empowerment discussions related to film, as well as television, and the production of both. The BronzeLens Film Festival will feature screenings in multiple venues, as well as informative panels, and enlightening Master Classes led by top names in film, direction, and production.

NBAF is pleased to co-present The Black Power Mixtape with IFC Films.  Modeled on the 1970s ‘mixtape’ format, this feature documentary examines the evolution of the Black Power Movement from 1967-76. Combining amazing 16mm footage that had been lying undiscovered in Swedish archives for the past 30 years, with music and contemporary commentary from artists, intellectuals, musicians and activists, Mixtape presents an insightful and startlingly fresh portrait of the people, society, culture and styles that fueled a change.  A panel discussion with Kathleen Cleaver and Deidre McDonald facilitated by Dr. Earl Picard follows the screening.

Mark your calendar for Fall for Film, a weekend film series at Southwest Arts Center, September 30-October 2, 2011, presented by NBAF with support from the Fulton County Board of Commissioners under the guidance of Fulton County Arts & Culture.  Curated by Leatrice Ellzy. 

Three days, seven films, so many stories.  This series includes features, documentaries, family films and a surprise or two that you won't want to miss.

UPDATED: MOVIE: BECOMING YOGAWOMAN: 30-day Yoga Challenge - Oct. 22

(Written July 31st.) Some of you may not know this, but I LOVE yoga. I like how it teaches me to stay in the moment, strengthens and stretches my muscles, and quiets my thoughts. There is one problem though...I have absolutely no discipline. I'll do it for a week or a month, then...nothing. To help, I am going to start a 30-day yoga/mediation challenge starting August 1st. I'm sharing this in hopes that I will be held accountable, not because I expect to blasted on this blog, but because I'm a woman of my word. Now that it is written, it shall be done.

Crime After Crime, shown on the Oprah Winfrey Network, tells the dramatic story of the legal battle to free Deborah Peagler, an incarcerated survivor of domestic violence. Over 26 years in prison could not crush the spirit of this determined African-American woman, despite the wrongs she suffered, first at the hands of a deceitful boyfriend who beat her and forced her into prostitution, and later by prosecutors who used the threat of the death penalty to corner her into a life behind bars for her connection to the murder of her abuser. Her story takes an unexpected turn two decades later when two rookie land-use attorneys step forward to take her case. Through their perseverance, they bring to light long-lost witnesses, new testimonies from the men who committed the murder, and proof of perjured evidence. Their investigation ultimately attracts global attention to victims of wrongful incarceration and domestic abuse, and becomes a matter of life and death once more.

It's back! Screen on the Green - Piedmont Park

Piedmont Park Conservancy is proud to announce that with the support of local companies, Screen on the Green is back for another great season. For five consecutive Thursday evenings, June 2 - June 30, fans will enjoy classic films under the beautiful Atlanta skyline. In addition, stay tuned for details about voting for our Viewer's Choice film on June 23.

In consideration of others, Screen on the Green attendees are asked to leave pets at home. Umbrellas, high-backed chairs and grills are strictly prohibited. Parking is extremely limited so please take MARTA.

Flicks on 5th Announces Schedule for 6 Week Summer Film Series

The 6^th Annual Flicks on 5^th Summer Film Series kicks off June 15^th for 6 weeks of incredible movie entertainment. This FREEadmission summer film series is held on Wednesday nights on 5^thStreet Bridge in the heart of Georgia Tech’s Technology Square (Spring Street at 5^th Street). Grab a lawn chair or blanket and join us for a one of a kind experience of watching movies in the streets of Midtown with the picturesque skyline as a backdrop.
