As a "naturalista" or "Curly Girl", a woman who styles coily/curly hair without the use of relaxers or chemicals, I wanted to find a way to prevent dryness and breakage. After reading numerous blog posts and viewing every video I could find on YouTube about the Huetiful steamer, I was super-excited giving it try. I opened the box and carefully put it together using the pictures and instructions provided. It was fairly simple to assemble. Three pieces. That’s all! However, its three-prong cord was too short to extend to the outlets near my dining room table, so I had to move it to the kitchen counter.
Before actually steaming my dry, brittle hair, I “co-washed” (or washed my hair with conditioner to help prevent excessive dryness) with Elasta QP Soy Oil Ultrahydration conditioner and later applied Organics Shea Butter PLUS and coconut oil as a deep conditioner. Without rinsing, I walked into the kitchen ready to see how well this treatment would actually condition my fine, 4a (type) hair.
Unfortunately my kitchen counter top is higher than my dining room table and the hood doesn’t adjust to height, so I had to sit on two pillows and two blankets to insure full hair coverage. (It was comfy enough to get the job done.) Once the two-minute wait for the “steam action” to begin, I sat under the hood with a towel around my neck to wipe any mist from my brow and protection against any drips of hot water. The hood itself is designed to capture the water not absorbed and gets warm really quickly. The process began, and I started to hear its slight hissing sound. I saw and felt the steam as it penetrated my strands. Because of its limited flexibility I had to tilt my head forward from time to time for the steam to reach the very back of head, (yes, the “kitchen”) while making sure I didn’t sit too high, leaving room for the steam above. I occasionally opened the small, round vents on the top of the hood when it got too hot for me, which only happened twice.
After approximately 20 minutes, the treatment was done. However, because I knew my hair needed special attention, I refilled the reservoir for another 20-minute treatment. The process was simpler, as my comfort level with the steamer increased. When it was complete, I walked into the bathroom to inspect the results. I LOVED IT! My hair was much softer. My fine strands felt stronger and coils were POPPING. I was truly happy with the results. I rinsed my hair, which was still very soft afterwards, added a little Cantu Shea Butter Moisturizer, twisted my hair, and disassembled the steamer.
Dismantling was simple. I wiped the hood down with a damp cloth, poured the small amount of water out of the reservoir, placed it all on towel to dry overnight before placing it back in the box the next morning.
All and all, I absolutely love the results. I will definitely incorporate using it as a part of my hair management routine, especially since I currently prone to having dry, porous hair. The only problems I had were the cord length (with no three-prong extension cord available) and making sure I streamed the very back of my hair. Both issues were easily remedied. I will be using the Huetiful Steamer again SOON and HIGHLY recommend you do the same!
